The Rules to Ship Lithium-ion are Changing: Do You Know Them?

The rules for shipping lithium-ion batteries are changing. The new requirements implemented by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) are designed to ensure that shipments of lithium-ion batteries are safe and compliant with international air transport regulations.

Under the new regulations, all shippers must use an approved packaging system when sending any shipment of lithium-ion batteries via air freight. The approved packaging systems include UN Specification Packaging Type B and C or ATA 300 Category A/B containers. All packages containing lithium-ion cells or batteries must pass a series of tests before being allowed to be shipped via air freight. These tests include drop tests, stacking pressure tests, vibration tests, thermal shock tests, and others.

In addition, all shipments must be accompanied by a lithium-ion battery shipping document that describes the contents of the package, including the type and quantity of cells or batteries. The shipper must also provide detailed instructions for handling and storing the shipment in accordance with IATA regulations.

These new requirements are designed to reduce potential risks associated with air transport of lithium-ion batteries. Businesses involved in the air transportation of these items must understand the new rules to comply with all applicable regulations. Failure to do so could result in fines or other penalties imposed by regulatory authorities.

The rules for shipping lithium-ion batteries are constantly changing, so staying informed on the latest developments is important. Check with your local regulatory authorities before shipping lithium-ion batteries via air freight. Knowing and understanding the rules is essential to ensure your shipments are safe, secure, and compliant with all applicable regulations.
