Rise in Devastating Lithium-Ion Battery Fires Demands Action

Lithium-ion battery fires have become a serious, nationwide problem, causing devastating property damage and loss of life in many cities across the United States.

In New York City alone, the FDNY responded to nearly 200 lithium-ion battery fires in 2021, and with 92 investigations, 64 injured people, and nine fatalities so far this year, officials fear that 2021 numbers may soon be surpassed. Adding to the threat is the fact that many of these batteries are cheap, poorly made, and more likely to malfunction due to their low-quality components.

The danger has moved from just airplanes, as uninstalled batteries are now banned from checked luggage due to their combustible nature, to homes nationwide where e-bikes and scooters are charging up with improperly manufactured batteries. Firefighters describe the potential destruction of these fires as being “compared to when an accelerant is used,” such as gasoline.

In response to this crisis, NYC City Council members have proposed a program providing new lithium-ion batteries for bikes and scooters at reduced or no cost at all to reduce demand for cheaper models.

A second plan would require businesses that use e-bikes commercially to provide workers with fireproof containers for charging their batteries. Additionally, fire chiefs from around the country will come together at the National Firefighter Safety Stand Down Meeting in May 2021 to discuss strategies to combat this escalating number of battery-linked fires.

Proper safety measures must be taken when using any electronic device powered by a lithium-ion battery to protect people and property from the potential destruction caused by these fires. Consumers should be aware of the dangers associated with faulty or low-quality batteries, while businesses must ensure they provide adequate safety measures.
