Defective Lithium-Ion Battery Recalls are on the Rise
What’s Your Recall Strategy?
At least 20,000 Ancheer e-bikes have been recalled because lithium-ion batteries risk overheating and catching on fire.
In an article by Russell Maas for AboutLawsuits.com, he states that the recall of Ancheer e-bikes is due to defective lithium-ion batteries that have caused short-circuiting and thermal runaway events, resulting in hundreds of serious injuries.
He goes on to say that this is not the first time defective lithium-ion batteries have caused a safety hazard and subsequent recall. Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries pose a serious risk if not handled properly. Back in 2017, a three-year-old girl from Pennsylvania died in a house fire after a hoverboard caught on fire.
However, this danger is not exclusive to e-bikes and hoverboards.
E-scooters are widely popular devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, and U.S. safety officials have begun urging riders to use protective equipment while riding them. Between 2017 and 2019, more than 132,000 injuries were reported from electric scooters, hoverboards, and e-bikes.
While a recall is never a welcome situation, it’s important to have a plan or strategy in place to ensure that it’s efficiently and safely handled.
